The village of Hittisau in Bregenzerwald offers an Austria first – a visit to the country’s one and only Women’s Museum, dedicated to various topics around womanhood. The museum presents two to three exhibitions a year amid sophisticated, contemporary wooden architecture.
The subsequent hike along the trail in Hittisau offers a varied and multifaceted experience. The approximately two-hour guided hike takes you first along the Bolgenach river, through a gorge and a suspension bridge, past special natural habitats, to an old water-powered sawmill and back to the village. The afternoon offers plenty of relaxation and enjoyment: after an energising lunch break, at the Löwen mountain distillery in Au you can get a real taste for the region in the form of traditional distillates with a modern touch, made from various fruits, herbs and roots. The distillery is housed within a listed building, lovingly restored over the years.
The return journey to the hotel takes in Schwarzenberg, often considered the most beautiful village in Bregenzerwald. While you’re here it’s certainly worth visiting the small centre and the local church with Apostle frescoes by the famous baroque painter, Angelika Kauffmann.
