The quaint market town of Rankweil is dominated by this fairytale-esque basilica perched on a hill at its centre. This formidable building on the Liebfrauenberg is a landmark in the truest sense, visible from all over the valley. It’s a fortified castle, built in a style typical of early Christian architecture in the old Roman region of Raetia. The basilica was formerly a pilgrimage destination, housing objects including the “Miraculous Image of Our Lady” and the Stone of St. Fridolin. Nowadays this once hard-to-access basilica is now open to all, within walking distance of the centre and main square of Rankweil.
