The truly picturesquely Lünersee (“Lunar Lake”) at an altitude of 1,970m sits at the foot of the Schesaplana mountain and is surrounded by various peaks. There’s a wonderful circuit along the lake’s shore that takes about two hours and is relatively flat. Lünsersee was once the largest natural mountain lake in the Eastern Alps, but as well as being a beautiful site it’s now also an important source of hydropower generation. The Lünsersee cable car takes you up to the Douglasshütte with a view of the gigantic dam wall, and has overnight accommodation possibilities even for large groups. Onwards from Lünsersee, numerous routes of varying difficulty lead into the surrounding mountain world. It’s a place not to miss: in fact, Lünsersee was voted the most beautiful place in Austria in 2019.
